Why Feed Raw?

Why feed raw when you can scoop and go? In a society that barely cooks food for their families it is no wonder people shy away from raw feeding their pets. With Vets pushing prescription diets, the commercials on TV with their marketing dollars, and people believing there is no way they could balance their pet's food through a raw diet would be one of the reasons kibble is in most homes. Through the years as I have talked to people about raw feeding I can remember the look on their faces as I started the conversation, but I also remember the look when they had the light bulb go off. That moment that they get it, it truly is priceless!

Just with anything "New" we have to start somewhere, right? Well raw feeding really is not that scary as long as you follow some basic information and balance your dog's food over time. Just like us, they do not need to have every nutrient in a single meal, however over a week's time they do need their nutritional panel met. So how would you do that? First you need to think about how you want to feed raw, prepackaged, prey model, or BARF. If you are making your own there are many websites out there to help you find the correct balance also books available with recipes.
The starting points for a balanced diet is variety, just like us variety gives you the nutrients you need over a certain amount of time. Supplements can be added and oils as well. Below is a starting point to work from. This would be for a 65# adult dog of ideal weight getting 2.5% of his body weight. Liver is always half the amount of total organs. To find the amounts do (Dogs Weight) x 16 x 2.5%=Ounces you need to feed.

Muscle Meat-20.8 oz
Bone-2.6 oz
Liver-1.3 oz
Organs(excludes liver)-1.3 oz
Total-26 oz

To know what amount to feed you would use the %'s listed below times the number of total ounces you are to feed for the day.

Muscle Meat-80%
Bone-10%
Liver-5%
Organs(excludes liver)-5%
Total-100%

If you want to add veggies then you would change a few of the %'s to include veggies

Muscle Meat-18.2 oz
Bone-2.6 oz
Liver-1.3 oz
Organs(excludes liver)-1.3 oz
Veggies-2.6
Total-26 oz

Muscle Meat-70%
Bone-10%
Liver-5%
Organs(excludes liver)-5%
Veggies-10%
Total-100%
