Allergies-Food Elimination

The Healthy Bark
Food allergies as I have said, are not hard to figure out, it just takes times to get there and clean out the body. So you need to start with Eliminating the foods that are causing the issues. This can be done a few ways and with some herbals to help move the body along.

With food or environmental allergies you have to detox the body. The reason for this is you have to help the whole body get healthy. The liver and kidneys get very stressed when they are dealing with allergies, this in turn starts a breakdown through the whole body. From skin to internal organs all have felt the stress of the allergy. Since food is meant to be healthy for them and us you need to start with feeding the body what it needs to heal.

When doing an elimination diet you need to feed this for 8 weeks. At the 4 week mark you will see some symptoms get worse, it is the body flushing things out. What built up in the body needs to leave the body and there are not that many ways for it to do this part. A journal can become your best friend.

I will always recommend you go to a raw diet as I personally have seen the wonders of feeding pets raw. I have watched a cat come back from deaths door, a dog go from severe food allergies to being able to eat the meat protein that when cooked, caused bad reactions. I watched my lab Sadiesue go from barely being able to play at a young age do to poor joints from birth to chasing a squirrel a week before she passed at 15 years old. All because herbals, raw diets and homemade diet supported her body naturally.

For an elimination diet you first need to look at what food you first noticed the reaction to, from there we want to remove the first five ingredients, all grains, all by-products, and chemicals from the equation. Next you need to have a protein to feed and decide if you want to make the diet or purchase one. If you are going to purchase than I would look at Answers Straight raw foods. This is a very clean diet of just Meat, Bone, and Organ, nothing else. If you decide you want to make a diet than there are a few options I have used. Just remember this is not a long term diet plan, it is meant to help reset the body.

Option one:
  • Navy Beans (Soak over night before cooking)
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Coconut Oil-Raw Organic
  • Herbal Supplements (Will list at bottom)
Option two:
  • Boiled-Rabbit de-boned (Keep the broth and use over the meal)
  • Red Organic Quinoa
  • Kale-Small Amounts (Lightly steamed)
  • Coconut Oil-Raw Organic
  • Herbal Supplements (Will list at bottom)
Both of these can be used in rotation. Just do your pet and yourself a favor and soak the beans as they will cause horrible gas if you do not, trust me on this!

Fasting before you start the diets. If you can get the Answers Raw Goats Milk/Kefir this would be ideal. Figure out how many calories they need in a day and use the milks split into 4 meals, do this for three days to give the body a jump start. Using this can cut down on the number of weeks you need to feed the elimination diet.

Once you see the allergy symptoms clear up you can start adding in new proteins. Try Turkey next, than beef or chicken (if they were not in the pets diet before), and so on. Quail, duck, lamb, and lean pork (not ham or bacon as it has nitrates in it) can be used. Organic pasture raised eggs can also be used as they are a great protein source. Add one new ingredient in for a week, if no reaction add it to the can feed list. Go back to the elimination diet only for a couple of days than add in a new meat and so on. By the end of the month you should have a great pictures of what is causing the issues. If there is a reaction than you need to feed the body the elimination diet again for 2 weeks. I know this sounds time consuming, but in the end you and your pet will feel much better as you will not be watching your pet suffer from sore ears, bad skin, and overall poor health.

Kitties
For Kitties I would recommend using either the Answers raw for cats or using Rad cat in the lamb or turkey formulas. If you cannot get your kitty to eat raw than look at Weruva canned cat foods and pick ones they have not had in flavors. Dry food are very harsh on the kitties and I do not recommend feeding them. If you must because they will not touch either raw or canned than look at Orijen dry in the Six-fish formula, or Acana in the Lamb or Regional formulas. Orijen/Acana have the least amount of added vitamins because they use real food to balance their foods. Look at the "Ways to switch kitty" post as well.
